There Are Days…

There are days when the tears come.

They come and they slip silently down your face.  They come despite the clenched jaw, the hurried blinking and the swallowing of pain.

There are days when the tears come.

When you feel as if your emotions are teetering on the edge, and when the tight rein on the wildness of your feelings begins to slip from your hands.

There are days when the tears come.

When the answer to “Are you all right?”  is “I don’t know”  and truly  you don’t because something is hurting but you just don’t know.

There are days when the tears come.

When you wish you could press your back against a wall and be swallowed whole.  You crouch and fold and make yourself small, oh so small – invisible.

There are days when the tears come.

When your only cry, your only utterance is to God and the “why” is formed before you can stop yourself. When you have forgotten the HOW of it, forgotten how to rejoice, forgotten eucharisteo, forgotten to count the joys and thanksgivings, forgotten He is the HOW.

There are days when the tears come

When the planning, the scheming, the waiting, the impatience seem to wrap their heavy cloak around you.  They press and weigh you down and you stumble under the weight until you drop with weariness

There are days when the tears come

When, finally, the stumbling turns into acceptance, into blessing.

There are days when the tears come

And a gentle nudge, a reminder that “losing our own strength, and wisdom, and plans and desires, and being where every atom of our nature is like placid Galilee under the … feet of our Jesus” (Mrs. Charles E. Cowan) is our salvation from the turbulence.

There are days when the tears come

And we bring to Him on bended knee our fears, our desires and submit to God’s perfect plan, His impeccable timing.

There are days when the tears come

When we let all that we desire be conquered by the desire for Him.  All our struggles, the dark and dank corners, come under willing submission to His demand.

There are days when the tears come

“But what joy for all who find protection in Him!” (Psalm 2:12), “…the Lord still rules from heaven.  He watches everything closely, examining everything on earth.” (Psalm 11:4)

There are days…
