A Letter to God

God, that I could see through their eyes.

See into a world where poverty darkens door steps and death shrouds itself in misery. Where disease beckons with pain and agony.

God, that I could see through their eyes.

See into a world where hope should be lost.  Where salvation but a shadow, something that should never be caught.

God, that I could see through their eyes.

See scrounging, salvaging, foraging through heaps of trash and debris as a means to supply my needs.

God, that I could see through their eyes.

See slavery as the only option to rid a family of debt and financial turmoil.

God, that I could see through their eyes.

For just one day, see this suffering that has marked them children of poverty from even before they began to form.

For then, maybe then…

God, that I could see through Your eyes.

See a child, whose hair was numbered and days were ordered by You even before they were nestled warm in their mother’s womb.

God, that I could see through Your eyes.

Each swollen stomach, each shackle of bondage, each body ravaged by disease;  another  bloody stripe that landed upon your Son’s back

God, that I could see through Your eyes.

Each child, made and formed in your perfect image, regardless of their status, regardless of their country of birth.

God, that I could see through Your eyes.

Each child, a blessing.  Each life, a purpose, Each soul, created to worship You.

God, that I could see through Your eyes.

As you entreat your people to “welcome this child” on Your behalf.

God , that I could see through Your eyes.

The sadness at all that is ignored in the name of “too busy” and “there is not enough”

God, that I could see through Your eyes.

As You gaze upon a child who is finally offered hope, offered love in Your name

God, that I could see through Your eyes.

As You watch Your children gather and remember and act upon the sacrifice that Your own Child experienced as He was betrayed, beaten, abandoned and crucified.

God, that I could see through Your eyes.
